With a length of more than 60 km, the Assietta Road SP173 and the adjacent Colle delle Finestre Road SP172, together with their carriageable annexes, constitute the backbone of a complex roadway, above 2,000 meters in elevation and almost entirely unpaved, that is traveled by cyclists, bikers, hikers on foot and motorized users (on permitted days), from June 1 to October 31. Their careful use and conservation not only contributes to preserving the priceless environmental landscape resources that develop in the Orsiera-Rocciavré and Gran Bosco di Salbertrand protected areas, but offers the opportunity to understand a territory and the signs left over time by its people, along an itinerary of incredible historical, artistic, environmental and recreational experience.

The Sacra di San Michele is the symbolic abbey of Piedmont, built in the Alps all around a rock between 983 and 987, it is the most striking religious site in the entire region. Its exceptional location dominates and overlooks the entire lower valley. In an ideal itinerary, you may join the Archangel of Mount Pirchiriano with two other important abbeys: that of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy and that of Mount Sant'Angelo on the Gargano. It appears that the Sacra was the inspiration for the novel and subsequent film “The Name of the Rose.”

Located in the homonymous municipality, it is one of the most important defensive systems in Piedmont, along with the fortified complex of Fenestrelle and that of Vinadio. It was employed in alternating phases by both the Savoy and the French. In fact, its position in the middle of a bottleneck in the upper Susa Valley made it a menace both to armies coming down from the upper valley and to those coming up from the valley floor.
